History

House Sarris is an old noble family, the second of the tribes to settle and organise themselves into nobility, the right hand of the then ruling House Atsir. Though it has now fallen far from its previous place in the political hierarchy, just as House Atsir misses no opportunity to remind Atsiria of the power it once held, so does House Sarris. This pride in her ancestors' history was among many things young Tyrande, born heir, was taught as a child, for Ilsernans value a sharp intellect just as Atsirians value family. Tyrande admired her mother the Lady Cenaria, an intelligent and self-assured woman, greatly, and strove to emulate her from a young age. Her childhood consisted of reading books on history and engineering in the many libraries Ilserna is known for, watching plays in the theatres peppered throughout the city, and observing her mother going about her duties every chance she had, noting them down with pen and paper.

When Tyrande was twenty one, she married her longtime suitor, Malfurion, and he followed her when she was sent to Razen to act as Ilserna's representative in the Jewel's Council. It was there when she finally understood in how little acclaim House Sarris and Ilserna were now held. Her voice in Council was little considered at the best of times, even less than the voices of commoners, and it was enough to infuriate a woman as proud of her heritage as Tyrande.

After a few mistakes, where she asserted herself as she believed was her right, but only made her appear as arrogant as her predecessors, she learnt how to act humble, especially before the King Consort and then Regent Thanes, a difficult task considering his roots in House Meatha, the family that had replaced Sarris as the maintainer of the Hanalan trade route. Outside the Palace, she found Razen was otherwise quite agreeable, for the city held the famous Archives, and housed the Atsirian University where she had once upon a time hoped to study. Then, after ten sometimes frustrating years in Razen ended, she received news from home: the city was in the grip of a strange disease. She immediately presented the news to the Council, pleaded for aid for the families of the sick, and, for once, her voice was heard.

By the time she reached Ilserna with the aid she had asked for, her worst fear had been realised; Lady Cenaria and Lord Zaetar had already succumbed to the disease, one week after they sent her the news.

The transition of power from Cenaria to Tyrande was smooth, as Tyrande had followed in her mother's footsteps so carefully that the two women were of similar mindset, and her people are devoted to their new Lady. Holding a deep love of reading and learning, she spends most of her free time in the library, where she gathers information for her two main research interests: the disease that had ravaged her city and took her parents, and a way to restore the city to its former glory.

Personality

Tyrande is a quiet woman, but she is deeply passionate about her city and her family, about learning and teaching, about research and discovery. Like nearly all Ilsernans, she is highly intelligent and very well-read. She takes joy in discussing history and literature with those of similar intellect, sponsoring the talented and teaching those who love learning as much as she does, rich or poor. It is this demonstration of her kindness, uncharacteristic of her predecessors, that makes her well loved in Ilserna. Her years in Razen have tempered the arrogance that comes naturally to those of House Sarris, but it has made no dent in the pride she carries in her family and her city's history.

Though she is not as arrogant as her predecessors, like them, Tyrande is aloof and withdrawn towards those who wish to know her personally, as more than their liege or a teacher, and it takes time to wear down her reserve. Her marriage took time to become used to, as her husband, Malfurion, is similarly reserved, but now their silences in conversation are comfortable instead of awkward. Yet, as she has grown older, a maternal urge has emerged. She dreams of children, many of them, daughters and sons to teach all she knows, a family, and how she would love for a daughter to follow in her footsteps as she had followed Cenaria's. As she ages, the more she fears that she may be barren, and grieves over the prospect almost as much as she still grieves over her parents' deaths.

Her years in Razen have also made her realise how very little Ilserna counts in the landscape of Atsirian politics and government. While it frustrates her to be reminded of the now faded present, she has the presence of mind to know that what her city needs, and the greatest legacy she can leave for the daughter she longs for, is something that will give great fame to House Sarris, and for Ilserna to be known as the Forgotten City no more.

Appearance

Tyrande is tall for an Atsirian woman, with long, wavy black hair that is often tied back, brown eyes and bronzed skin darkened by the sun. She is known to be quite pretty for one of House Sarris, and when she thinks no one can see, will carry a wistful look on her face, as if recalling something from long ago.

Tyrande is a fictional chracter played by [personal profile] megaera_inc for [community profile] himitsu_sensou. She is played by Mercedes de Morcerf from Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, which is the work of GONZO raping Alexandre Dumas. And no, I've never played World of Warcraft. Go figure.
